영화에는 많은 장르가 있지만, 지금까지 나에게 가장 깊은 감동과 또 깨달음을 전해준 영화의 대부분은 실제로 있었던 일들이나 인물들을 토대로 만든 다큐멘타리 형식의 영화들이였다.

"Awakenings" 도 그런 영화중의 한 편.

1990년도에 만들어진 작품으로, Robert De Niro & Robin Willams 가 주연을 맡았고, 특히 이 두 사람의 극중 인물이 실제 인물들이라는 점이 더욱 큰 감명을 안겨준 영화. 기염성 뇌염 환자 Leonard Lowe 를 연기한 로버트 드 니로의 절망과 희망의 경계를 넘나다는 연기. Dr. Malcolm Sayer 의 열정과 진지함을 진실된 연기로 승화시킨 로빈 윌리엄스의 열연은 '절묘'그 자체이다.

Dr. Malcom Sayer: What we do know is that, as the chemical window closed, another awakening took place that the human spirit is more powerful than any drug - and that is what needs to be nourished: with work, play, friendship, family. These are the things that matter. This is what we'd forgotten - the simplest things.
