늘 격려해주던 제 직장 보스가 은퇴를 하셨어요
나이를 먹으면서 정말 이런분처럼
다른사람을 키워주는 사람이 되어야겠다는 생각이 듭니다.
이분이 요새 특히 더 그리워지는 직장의 힘든시기인지라
다시한번 제책에 보내주셨던 격려사를 읽어봅니다.

She is passionate about helping her students learn and
brings a joyful presence into the classroom.
Because of her dedication and limitless energy, her students very much enjoy learning with
her and they learn a lot.
그녀는 학생들이 배우도록 돕는데 열정적이고 수업에 기쁨을 가져다 주는 분이지요. EJ 선생님의 헌신과 끝없는 에너지 덕분에 학생들은 재미있게 배우고 더 많이 배우게 됩니다.
EJ Brown joined the faculty of the University of Texas at
Arlington's (UTA) English Language Institute (ELI) in 2006. One story from that time may illustrate her
value.
EJ 선생님은 2006년부터 텍사스 주립대 알링턴 캠퍼스의 교수진으로 동참 하셨는데요, 그당시 에피소드 하나가 선생님의 가치를 대변해 줄것 같습니다.
Early in her first semester here, several Korean students
complained about having a non-native English teacher. They wanted to change
classes to have an American teacher, and if they could not get a different
teacher, they said they would leave our program. The ELI's response was that at UTA and most
other universities, the professors come from many countries and students needed
to be able to communicate with many different people. If Ms. Brown's teaching was not good, we would help the
students, but if their only concern was that she was a non-native English
speaker, we would not change their teacher.
선생님이 이곳에서 맨 첫학기를 지내던 초창기 시절에 몇명의 한국 학생들이 제게 와서 원어민 교사가
아니라고 불평을 해왔습니다. 미국 선생님으로 바꾸어 달라고 요구 하면서 다른 선생님으로
바꿔주지 않으면 학교를 나가겠다고 하더군요. 텍사스 주립대나 대부분의 다른 대학들의 입장에서 보면,
교수님들이 다른 나라 출신들인 경우가 많고 하니 학생들은 많은 다른 나라 인종들과의 의사소통 능력을 키워야 한다는 것이
ELI의 방침이라고 알려 주었습니다. 브라운 선생님의 수업이 좋지 않다면 학생들을
돕겟지만, 그들의 불만이 다만 선생님이 원어민이 아닌것에만 기인한다면 교사를 바꿔줄수 없다고 햇지요.
What happened? The
students stayed in her class and soon raved about her teaching. They told other students how good she was,
and other students asked to be in her classes.
Why? The students learned from
EJ Brown and they loved the learning environment.
그래서 어떻게 됬을까요? 그학생들은EJ 선생님 수업에 남았고 곧 선생님의 수업을 열렬히 칭송하게 됬지요. 다른 학생들에게 그녀가 얼마나 능력있는 선생님인지 말하고 다니니 다른 학생들도EJ 선생님 반에 들어가게 해달라고 요청하더군요. 학생들은EJ 선생님으로 부터 더잘 배우게 되고 그반의 수업 분위기에 열광했습니다.
As you learn English, you may use it with people from all
over the world, many of whom will speak it as their second language as
well.
영어를 배우다 보면 전세계에서 온 사람들과 그언어를 쓰게 되지요. 그리고 그많은 사람들도 영어를 외국어로 말하는 사람들일 것입니다."
